Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium), June 24th 2021
Emil Frey Racing headed straight to Spa-Francorchamps for the official test days, after a successful race weekend in Zandvoort (NL). The 7km-long track will be the fighting ground for the longest and therefore most important race of the Fanatec GT World Challenge 2021 in a little more than five weeks.
The official Test Days comprised a total of 16 race hours and started on Tuesday morning, at 9am, with a 3-hour morning session. Testing resumed in the afternoon from 1pm to 6pm. The same program was put in place for Wednesday, with a total of 61 cars representing nine brands participating. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 safety measures, the event took place behind closed doors. Preparations for the world-famous race kicked into the most crucial phase with the official Test Days. The two Test Days were shaped by various interruptions. It almost felt like the drivers were taking the Test Days too seriously and were more than eager to show their fighting spirit by racing in attack mode.
A few weeks ago, PIRELLI launched their new wet compound tire. Emil Frey Racing was able to get to know and test the tire in Spa. This was critical to prepare for the ideal setup for the upcoming races in rainy conditions. The team was able to compare the old and new tires and was able to evaluate their effect on the car’s balance. Emil Frey Racing was able to put a sizable number of kilometers on the new set of wet tires while also improving its durability. Furthermore, important learnings regarding the crossover point during changing track conditions were reviewed. It defines the ideal moment for a tire change from slicks to wet tires and vice versa.
To maintain a constant high pace, the team has been working with great intensity on the setup.
The Test Days were of great importance for the new Emil Frey Racing drivers especially, to get into the groove and find a routine for the 24h race.
Emil Frey Racing is already preparing for the upcoming challenge in Misano (IT) next week. The Sprint Cup of the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe is going into its third round. The Safenwil Squad is set to give it their all to keep the high performance level from Zandvoort.
